IDENTITY CARD FOR THE FIRST TIME
Requirements:
The applicant must provide the following documents without exception:

Birth certificate issued by the Supreme Electoral Court, which can be obtained online at https://www.consulta.tse.go.cr/appcdi#/ or valid passport.

Two passport size photographs with dimensions of 5cm high by 4cm wide with grey background. Emphasis should be given to the face.

The applicant must come to the consulate with at least one witness who is a direct relative or two Costa Ricans who know him or her, each with their valid identity card and in good condition.
Cost: The procedure has no administrative costs. The user must make a deposit of $100 in cash at the consulate, corresponding to the payment of the courier in order to send the documentation to the Civil Registry in Costa Rica.
IDENTITY CARD RENEWAL
Requirements:
The applicant must provide the following documents without exception:

Copy of the expired identity card or birth certificate issued by the Supreme Electoral Court, which can be obtained online https://www.consulta.tse.go.cr/appcdi#/

Two passport size photographs with dimensions of 5cm high by 4cm wide with light grey background. Emphasis should be given to the face.

If the identity card was lost, you must present the complaint document filed before the pertinent local authority.
Cost: The procedure has no administrative costs. The user must make a deposit of $100 in cash at the consulate, corresponding to the payment of the courier in order to send the documentation to the Civil Registry in Costa Rica.
